A local pharmacist says demand for things such as cough medicine is at some of the highest levels she’s ever seen.
Dr. Kara O’Keefe is pharmacist in charge at Family Drug Mart.
She says in all her years as a pharmacist, this has been the toughest year she has seen in terms of demand.
Compounding that, O’Keefe explains, are backorders of medications.
She states that no medication class is immune to being on backorder right now, a frustrating situation for pharmacists and the public as they don’t have access to the medications they usually go to during cold and flu season.
O’Keefe says the drugs they use on a daily basis can go on backorder, or be in short supply at a moment’s notice.
She says that could mean that instead of giving a patient the standard three-month supply, they can only give the one month to ensure everyone access. She asks the public to have patience as they work through it.
