The Murphy Centre in St. John’s is celebrating the expansion of some of its literacy programs in areas throughout the province.
Today is Family Literacy Day.
Claire Hutchings, Provincial Literacy Program Coordinator with the Murphy Center says they recently expanded their literacy initiatives.
They started by partnering with The Gathering Place in St. John’s about two years ago, and now they’ve set up programs in Gander and Corner Brook, with another one in the works for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Hutchings says it feels wonderful to be able to offer such services, noting that the heart of the program is being able to offer the services to people who wouldn’t normally be able to access them.
She states that literacy skills help people in their every day lives by allowing them to read things like food labels and bus schedules, as well as helping with general communication.
