A strike seems imminent at Memorial University.
The faculty association and school administration say talks have reached an impasse, with the issue destined for the picket lines.
MUNFA have set a deadline for midnight tonight to reach some kind of compromise that would head off a disruption of classes and services at MUN.
The faculty association says they remain at the table today, but it “seems clear” they will be on strike starting Monday.
The school, meanwhile, are asking MUNFA to bring their latest offer to the members, which includes a 12 per cent increase in salary over four years, an additional 20 weeks of supplemented parental leave, and increased compensation for teaching additional courses.
According to the university, MUNFA is requesting a 14 per cent increase over four years and is also seeking greater input in collegial governance. MUN says they have requested faculty representation be added to the Board of Regents when the province updates the Memorial University Act.
In a media availability this afternoon, interim provost and vice-president academic, Dr. Neil Bose, says while they will return to the table, they are not expecting an eleventh-hour decision. He says the situation going forward for students is still being worked out.
He says the impact on the semester will depend on how long the strike lasts. If it is only a few days, there will be minimal disruption. If the strike lasts considerably longer, then there will be a larger impact.
MUN’s full offer is available online.
