Preparations are underway for the long-awaited Inquiry respecting the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System.
Innu advocate Simeon Tshakapesh—who lost his teenage son Thunderheart after time spent in care—had been a vocal proponent of an inquiry into Innu children in the child protection system
The inquiry gets underway in Happy Valley-Goose Bay starting on Monday with two weeks of hearings on the history of the Innu.
A week has been set aside in both March and April for private and community meetings with Innu sharing their experiences, while investigations will be carried out in June.
More community meetings are planned in the summer followed by another two weeks of investigations.
The inquiry will also include ceremonies to honour and remember.
