A social activist is spending the month celebrating and highlighting black history in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Laurabel Mba has partnered with Municipalities NL on a Black History Month project to not only celebrate local black history and achievements, but also promote diversity and inclusion.
She says the education system and society has often fallen behind in teaching black history, but improvements are slowly being made.
“But there’s still a long way to go in seeing black history as more than just civil rights movements or the slave trade,” says Mba, citing that black history is apart of Canadian history.
