The family of a woman who was brutally murdered in Stephenville in 2003 is continuing their fight ensure the man responsible stays out of their community.
Anne Maria Lucas was murdered by Robert Hillroy Legge, in 2003.
Legge pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 18 years. Now, only 16 years after the murder, he is out on parole.
A rally was held in Stephenville on Friday, following word Legge may want to return to Stephenville.
Tracy Lucas, speaking on behalf of Lucas’ family, says they’re tired of trying to keep Legge in prison. She says with him free after 16 years on a sentence of no parole until 18 years, the parole board “can’t count”.
Earlier Story
A rally was held yesterday in Stephenville to protest the return of a man to the community, where he was convicted of second degree murder in the death of his girlfriend.
Robert Hillroy Legge was convicted of murdering Anne Maria Lucas at her Alabama Terrace Apartment in 2003. He was on probation for assaulting her at the time.
The Bay St. George Status of Women Council was recently tipped off that Legge has been released from jail and intends on returning to the community.
A video of the event from Jonathan Myers on Facebook, shows dozens of people, all decked out in red, turning out to show their support at the event.
Speaking at the rally, Janice Kennedy, the Executive Director of the Status of Women Council, says Legge is not welcome to return.
She says Stephenville is a beautiful community and he does not deserve to come back. She says people are living in fear at the thought of him coming back, and having a safe community means he is not included in it.
Kennedy says they passed out a petition for people to sign, copies of which will be sent to the Parole Board and the West Bridge Halfway House.
