There is close to 40 cm of new snow on the ground on the Avalon Peninsula with similar amounts off the Avalon. The Burin Peninsula got about 35 cm and central Newfoundland about 25 cm.
One of the big issues this morning is with visibility as it’s actually windier than yesterday with gusts to 85 km/h at St. John’s International Airport. There are whiteouts in many areas and travel is not recommended in areas prone to whiteouts.
Drifting is a big issue as well as vehicles are becoming stuck in areas with heavy drifting.
The Avalon Peninsula was virtually shut down yesterday but it’s a different story today. Many are going with delayed openings to allow people time to dig out and get on the move.
Metro schools are closed for the morning. Some schools off the Avalon are also closed for all or part of the day. Metrobus has delayed the start of their service until 10:30.
Meteorologist Wanda Batten of the gander Weather Office says things should be milder for the Avalon and southern areas come the weekend.
A system Friday night will move through the island which likely means snow for central and the west coast and rain for the south and southeast including the Avalon.
