The cleanup from the latest snow storm has begun in the capital city.
Thirty-seven centimetres of snow was dropped on St. John’s in a Valentine’s Day blast.
Deputy City Manager of Public Works, Lynnann Winsor, says the snowfall wrapped up around 9:30 a.m. this morning and crews have been on the roads for the past 24 hours.
Garbage normally collected Tuesday and Wednesday will be collected tomorrow, while garbage normally collected Thursday and Friday will be a day late.
An initial pass on all streets is expected to be finished by 9:30 p.m., with all streets being widened by 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Sidewalks will take between four and seven days to be fully cleared.
Winsor feels like the snow clearing efforts over the past two days have been successful, but not without their challenges.
She says excessive winds can cause issues with drifting, which often leads to crews having to clear the same area multiple times over.
Another challenge has less to do with mother nature, and more to do with human nature.
She says they’ve received complaints of residents and contractors clearing snow onto city streets and sidewalks. Anyone who sees such an act is asked to call 311.
The snow mostly stopped by 9:30 a.m. on Wed. Feb. 15 and 37 cm is reported.
