Snowmobile season is well upon us, and the RCMP are reminding riders of the things they should keep in mind to stay safe while out on the trails.
The Mounties say riders should always be prepared for the unexpected by making people aware of their route, planned destination, and return time.
Riders should always pack additional food and water, as well as fire starting equipment and appropriate winter clothes.
The want riders to remember that while cell phones are a great communication tool, service is unavailable in many isolated areas, and other communication tools such as satellite phones, a SPOT device or other forms of GPS, should be considered.
As well, the RCMP is reminding that helmets are mandatory when riding on a snowmobile, and are vital to staying safe.
They say those who take unnecessary risks are putting additional strain on police and search and rescue teams.
