More than 60 people have been temporarily displaced by a fire late last night that forced authorities to shut off all electrical service and evacuate everyone from a 56-unit apartment building in Corner Brook.
Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging and meals at area hotels for 57 people from 35 units of the Bayview apartment complex on Beothuk Crescent. Tenants of the other 21 apartments made their own arrangements either with hotels or staying temporarily with relatives and friends.
The RNC say the Corner Brook Fire Department determined that the power supply had to be cut in order to rectify an issue after the building manager discovered smoke in the main electrical room.
Police say there were no injuries and no significant property damage.
Tenants were first evacuated to a nearby Salvation Army church hall until a decision was made on the building. It’s not yet known when the occupants will be allowed back home.
