The City of St. John’s is looking to make its Metrobus fleet electric.
The federal and municipal governments are partnering with the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium to conduct a pre-feasibility study on the cost and challenges of getting the Metrobus fleet to a zero emissions fleet through electrification.
The study will outline a phased approach to transition the buses to EVs to help reach the target set by the city’s Resilient St. John’s Community Climate Plan.
The plan will cost $200,000, with Ottawa paying the majority at $160,000, and the city providing the remaining $40,000. It is the third joint federal-municipal project announced in as many days.
Currently, 49 per cent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation.
The study is expected to be finished this summer.
