A man and woman accused of horrific sexual violence against children in the St. John’s area have now both chosen to be tried in Supreme Court.
The names of the accused, who are being tried separately, as well as any details that could identify the alleged victims, are banned from publication.
The 67-year-old woman, who has elected to be tried by judge and jury, faces three charges, including sexual assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The 65-year-old man faces 31 charges, including sexual interference, sexual assault with a weapon, and bestiality in the presence of children.
He’s elected trial by judge alone.
Separate preliminary inquiries have been set for both accused this summer, when it will be determined if there’s enough evidence to go to trial.
If that happens, guilty or not guilty pleas would be entered during formal arraignments in Supreme Court.
Police believe the incidents occurred in St. John’s between 1997 and 2009.
The RNC first announced the charges last August when they arrested the man in Montreal, where both accused are now residing.
