The snowmobile engines revved up again this morning as the Cain’s Quest endurance race resumed after a short pause.
The intense 3,500 km race kicked off 10:00 a.m. Saturday, but was postponed last night due to high winds and rain causing sea ice to open, icy road conditions, and low snow coverage inland.
Chris Lacey, the chair of Cain’s Quest, says snow and ice conditions are not as favourable as in the past but that just presents another challenge.
Deciding whether to pause or go ahead involves input from people at their checkpoints and many others.
They speak to search and rescue teams, emergency personnel, local people who know there, some who have actually been out on that particular section of trail involved and anyone else who can provide valuable information.
