Allegations of Chinese interference in the last two federal elections are dominating discussion in the nation’s capital.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing mounting pressure to call a federal inquiry into allegations that China actively interfered in the federal election process.
Political analyst, Tim Powers says there are national security laws governing what the Prime Minister can and cannot say about the allegations, but Trudeau is so far resisting calls for an inquiry into the matter.
The Globe and Mail reported last month that Canadian Security Intelligence Service documents show that China “employed a sophisticated strategy to disrupt Canada’s democracy in the 2021 election campaign.”
Powers says an inquiry would present its own unique challenges.
He says if state secrets are at play, and issues of national security intelligence, then that will present difficulties in what can and can’t be brought out into the public arena.
