The Environment Minister is outlining some challenges to island-wide public transit.
The provincial government has been trying to lower transportation greenhouse gas emissions through incentives and rebates for buying electric cars, as well as supporting Metrobus in St. John’s.
However, when asked how the provincial government can use public transit island-wide to reduce car dependency, Minister Bernard Davis said the population density of areas outside the cities presents a challenge.
He says the province has a large area that is sparsely populated, instead of an area like downtown Toronto that is small and densely populated. He says they are always looking for ways to expand public transit.
