A sad situation is playing out along the coastline near Heart’s Delight-Islington. A small pod of white-beaked dolphins are stuck in the sea ice next to the rocky shore.
Mayor Melvin Harnum says the local fire department managed to move some of the trapped animals using a sling to get them to the other side of the government wharf where some open water remains.
But they were unable to move any more dolphins, and the ice is starting to push into in that area as well.
DFO and Tangly Whales are also on the scene lending assistance.
A similar situation played out back in 2018 in the same area.
