The provincial government is expanding a rebate program which helps offset the cost of switching from oil heat to electric heat.
They’re working with Ottawa on a new multi-year program to expand residential home heating rebates. The program will support about 10,000 homeowners to transition their homes.
Low to high income brackets are eligible for the rebates, which will be for a minimum of $5,000 but may increase based on income level and type of heating system installation.
The two electric utilities—Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro—will continue to administer the program.
The funding is meant to be complementary to the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Grant launched last month.
Since the creation of the provincial Oil to Electric Rebate Program a couple of years ago, almost $7 million in rebates have been provided, converting 1,440 homes from oil to electric.
