Hundreds of passengers were left stranded over the weekend following the closure of the main terminal at St. John’s International Airport.
Airport CEO Dennis Hogan says dozens of flights were impacted, leaving passengers looking to get home no choice but to fork out extra money for food and accommodations.
Since the airlines were not at fault for the cancellations, they were only responsible for rebooking passengers on another flight within 48 hours.
Gabor Lukacs, President of Air Passenger Rights, says unless the investigation proves the airport or airline was connected to the fire, passengers are not entitled to any compensation.
He says unless it can be proven that the airport was somehow liable for the fire, an accidental fire is considered an act of God, therefore the airport is not responsible to make it up to impacted passengers.
