Despite a recent increase to Newfoundland and Labrador’s minimum wage, the NDP say the province’s lowest paid workers are continuing to fall behind.
The minimum wage in this province increased to $14.50 yesterday, and will jump by another 50 cents in the fall.
Leader Jim Dinn states that any increase to the minimum wage is good, but a living wage in this province is $21.65 based on the Bank of Canada inflation calculator.
Dinn stresses the importance of implementing a guaranteed basic livable income as the best way to address poverty.
A committee on the matter is now meeting regularly. Dinn hopes they will make recommendations on how such a system would work and a timeline for implementation.
