The AC Hunter Library is gearing up to launch this year’s seed library.
Starting in 2015, the initiative provides vegetable, flower, and herb seeds for those looking to start their own small backyard garden. Gardening books, magazines and DVDs are also available to those looking to brush up on their gardening knowledge.
The project, funded by the St. John’s Public Libraries Board, aims to address food insecurity by providing people with the skills and resources they need to grow their own plants.
Library technician with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries, Kristina Walters, says the seeds chosen are those that can survive the Newfoundland and Labrador climate.
She says the program is meant for those who wish to try gardening for the first time or try a new technique and experiment with growing their own food.
She says they have a wide variety including tomatoes, beets, beans, dill, oregano and sunflower seeds among others.
This year’s program launches Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
