The Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation says any decisions on a new theatre facility for the capital city region will be made in consultation with the arts community, but he’s doubtful the Reid Theatre will be part of the conversation.
Steve Crocker was responding to questions surrounding government’s intent to create a new mid-size theatre for the region.
Crocker says government must signal its intent before the planning process can begin, and now that the announcement has been made government will consult with the arts community to find out what’s suitable.
Crocker tells VOCM News whether the facility is a new build or a renovation to an existing structure remains to be seen, but he says whether the Reid Theatre, which has been sitting idle for a decade or so, is part of the conversation has yet to be determined.
“That will come from the community,” says Crocker. “Personally, I’m not sure that fits,” he admits, but “that’s not up to me to decide.”
