Hurricane Fiona not only destroyed homes and infrastructure on the province’s southwest coast last fall, but it uncovered and exposed important traces of the province’s past.
Provincial Chief Archaeologist Jamie Brake says the heavy surf and run-off exposed two previously unknown 19th Century sites near Grand Bay West.
Some wooden features were exposed dating back to the 1800s.
He says while the two Grand Bay West sites were previously unknown, a well-known Dorset site at Cape Ray was also exposed and damaged.
The Dorset pre-date modern Inuit and the site at Cape Ray is well documented and explored, but they are concerned about extent of the damage caused to the important site.
Brake says they’ll also be exploring other coastal sites for potential damage caused by last year’s hurricane.
