Phase one of the Education Action Plan has been rolled out in 80 schools across the province, and one school is certainly feeling the effects.
Students at St. John Bosco in Shea Heights gave two big thumbs up when asked about their thoughts on the new additions in school that derived from the Education Action Plan.
Principal Linda Hart says the students are loving the extra attention they’re getting from the extra supports they have through the Teaching Learning Assistant, Teacher Librarian, and Reading Specialist.
She says they’re also loving the “Learning Commons”; a place where students can explore and where learning is not something that’s dictated to them, but something they’re taking part in. Hart says they are owners in their own learning.
Hart says the implementations from the plan have made an incredible impact on how students learn and how teachers teach. She says it helps them deep-dive into what students really need.
She says in the school they focus a lot on data and looking at students and the specific areas they may have need in. Then, they respond to those needs through their teaching practices.
Plan is Great if Province Committed to Providing Resources to Do It, says NDP
The NDP says talking about the Education Action Plan is great but the resources are needed to actually carry it out.
Education Minister, Brian Warr provided an update on the province’s Education Action Plan yesterday, claiming 60 per cent of actions have been implemented or are substantially underway.
MHA for St. John’s Centre and former President of the NLTA, Jim Dinn says government needs the resources in place to be able to carry out these actions, but more importantly, are they committed to providing those resources.
He says regardless if you pay for it now, you’ll pay for it later, and pay more.
Dinn says if children are experiencing a better education, are healthier, and have a better outcome in life, then overall the pay-off is fantastic. If we don’t do that, don’t think that we’re getting out of anything cheap, as there will be a bigger cost in the end.
