Marine Atlantic has announced a delay in the implementation of its highly unpopular fuel surcharge increase set to begin tomorrow.
In April, the Crown corporation announced that its fuel surcharge was set to increase from 13 to 17 per cent, starting June 1.
That resulted in an immediate public outcry and quick response from Premier Andrew Furey and Tourism Minister Steve Crocker.
In a brief release issued today, Marine Atlantic says it has opted to delay the implementation of the updated fuel surcharge until at least December 1. In the meantime, the corporation is evaluating ongoing fuel pricing measures, including the implementation of the federal carbon tax this summer.
Premier Andrew Furey calls the announcement “great news” for the province and credits what he calls the province’s “strong voice and advocacy” for Marine Atlantic’s decision to delay the increase.
This is great news for Newfoundland and Labrador! Our strong voice and advocacy have been heard, as Marine Atlantic is making the responsible decision to delay the fuel surcharge. The ferry is a critical link for our province. https://t.co/avb1hfwePG
