Gladney’s bus company is suing the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District over the continued suspension of its contracts.
About four thousand students were left without a way to school when the district pulled the plug on February 11, a Saturday, citing safety concerns.
Within days, bus routes were being restored as other operators made deals with Gladney’s to use their approved drivers and buses to fill the void.
But in court filings, Gladney’s says they’re still in the dark about the reasons for the suspension, which they claim was unlawful for the lack of notice given, or option to fix the issues without disrupting service.
What’s more, they say there’s no provision in the contracts for a suspension, resulting in breach of contract.
The school district has said a fatal accident involving a Gladney’s bus and pedestrian, three days before the suspension, was just one of many factors in their decision.
In a statement to VOCM News, they say they’re aware of the court filing but unable to comment further.
Gladney’s is seeking unspecified damages for loss of profits, reputation and business opportunities since the suspension, as well as court costs.
