The idled St. Lawrence fluorspar mine has a new buyer, breathing new hope and optimism into the Burin Peninsula region.
The identity of the buyer and details of the purchase remain sealed by court order, at least until the transaction closes, which is expected to happen on Friday.
The province cannot comment further on the situation until the sale officially closes.
St. Lawrence Mayor Kevin Pittman says while what happens next remains to be seen, court approval of the sale has lifted spirits in the area.
That said, they still don’t know who the owner is at this time. They remain hopeful that the mine will be reactivated and people will get back to work.
Pittman says St. Lawrence is the only known fluorspar mine of its size in North America, and the ore produced there is the highest grade fluorspar in the world.
“If you want to buy something, wouldn’t you want the best quality that you can possibly get?” he asks rhetorically.
