The Department of Transportation has closed the Main Road in Englee on the Great Northern Peninsula due to runoff caused by heavy rain falling on the region.
The Main Road is being inundated with a torrent of water leading to fears of washouts.
Officials with the department are on the scene and the Main Road is closed to all traffic except in cases of emergency.
Dale Foote, meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the rain will continue tonight and into tomorrow.
The Northern Peninsula East , from about Englee to St. Anthony, is in for about 70 mm. Amounts could be even higher in some areas.
Mayor Stephanie Fillier says they’re watching the situation closely, and are worried that the runoff could cut every access in and out of town.
She says Battlecove Brook crosses not only the Main Road but two more access roads. “We’re hoping that the pavement is going to hold, and it’s not going to give…if it does we’re going to have a washout of all three roads.”
She says runoff has also caused rockslides in some areas of town and some residents are reporting water in their basements.
