A C.B.S. company has pleaded guilty in connection with the death of a worker, while a Nova Scotia firm has been fined after one of its employees suffered serious injuries on the job.
The fatal incident occurred in September of 2020 at the Triple J Aggregates quarry near Fowler’s Road.
A 62-year-old man from Fortune Bay was operating a rock crusher around 7 a.m. on a Friday morning when he was somehow pulled into the machinery.
The company was charged with 11 workplace violations while supervisor William Weir faced a single charge of failing to ensure the health and safety of workers on site.
They had pleaded not guilty to all charges with five days set aside for the trial last week. But instead, a deal was worked out between the Crown and defence that saw guilty pleas entered in exchange for other charges being withdrawn.
The case will be back in court next month for the facts to be spelled out, and sentencing.
Hurricane Industrial Equipment Fined
Meanwhile, a Nova Scotia company has been fined $10,000 after a workplace incident left an employee with serious hand and chest injuries.
Hurricane Industrial Equipment faced eight charges after the incident, also in C.B.S., in July of 2020.
A worker was doing repairs under a seven-tonne forklift when a part of it fell on him, causing the serious injuries which he continues to recover from.
Charges against Blue Water Agencies, which owned the yard where the incident occurred, were dropped back in January.
