SIRT-NL is investigating following an incident at Stephenville Airport last Friday involving the removal of a man from a Delta Airlines flight that had diverted to Newfoundland.
Video circulating on social media shows officers escorting a man over the stairs from the plane and across the tarmac to a police vehicle.
When they get close, they roughly push the man against the vehicle several times and he’s put through the open door. At one point the man’s foot can be seen lifted high above the roof of the SUV.
SIRT-NL Director Michael King says an investigation into the incident has been launched, and no further comment will be made at this time.
RCMP meanwhile say they were contacted after the crew of a Delta Airlines flight indicated it was being diverted to Stephenville due to an unruly passenger.
Police say the passenger, who was described as intoxicated, belligerent and causing fear to some people on the plane, was detained by crew members on the flight.
The passenger was described as acting in a manner that was endangering the aircraft, crew and other passengers.
The 34-year-old appeared in court on Friday on two charges of endangerment of an aircraft under the Aeronautics Act.
He was remanded to custody and is scheduled to (appear in) return to court tomorrow.
RCMP say in the interest of transparency and accountability they referred the matter to SIRT-NL.)
