The support and subsequent search vessel for the Titan submersible has returned to St. John’s Harbour.
The Polar Prince returned to the capital city around 8:00 a.m. this morning after first setting out to sea last week to provide support in the Titan’s Titanic expedition.
The Titan was launched from the ship on Sunday morning and made its last contact with the crew an hour and 45 minutes into the journey.
Hours later, after contact with the Titan failed, the Polar Prince notified officials, who then launched the search and rescue mission into the North Atlantic.
On Thursday, the US Coast Guard announced an ROV had discovered a debris field consistent with a “catastrophic implosion” just 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow.
Because the Polar Prince is registered in Canada, the vessel is now the subject of an investigation launched by the Transportation Safety Board to determine its role in the expedition.
A team of investigators are currently en route to St. John’s and will provide updates as they become available.
