The Atlantic Premiers have launched a campaign against the controversial clean fuel regulations.
The campaign, called Fight the Federal Gas Hike, encourages residents to contact their local MPs and ask them to reconsider implementing the regulations.
Six of the province’s seven MPs are Liberal. Of those six, only one has come out against the regulations, that being Avalon MP Ken McDonald.
The Premiers want to clarify that the clean fuel regulations and the carbon tax increase are two separate policies.
The quarterly rebate being paid out by the feds is for the carbon tax, while the increases set to come from the clean fuel regulations will not be offset.
The increases from the carbon tax came into effect today, while the Premiers expect the adjustments at the pumps from the regulations will be seen later in the week.
The group says they are committed to fighting climate change – but people in the region should only be asked to pay an equal part, and according to a report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer that won’t be the case.
