Today is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador, a day to reflect on the sacrifice made by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during World War I.
Premier Andrew Furey is at Beaumont Hamel for the annual memorial ceremony. Furey says this year’s service will be even more special as this is the last year all soldiers will be at the site.
By next year, the ‘unknown soldier’, discovered last year, will be repatriated at the National War Memorial in St. John’s.
Furey says every July 1 ceremony is special, but this one carries additional sentiment and he believes it is only fitting that the premier be there.
