With fuel costs skyrocketing because of increased existing taxation and a separate new tax, politicians are calling on governments to reduce the burden.
The provincial NDP wants the provincial government to remove the provincial portion of the HST which is applied to home heating energy. Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown says that would benefit households in Newfoundland and Labrador. The 8 per cent of the provincial portion of the HST was removed from home heating as far back as 2011, but was re-introduced in 2015.
Brown says such action would bring immediate relief as people would not have to worry about filling out forms or ensuring that their current address matches up with what government has on file.
