The Town of Carbonear does not yet have all the information it requires in order to make a decision regarding Engine 803, a throwback to the railway era.
The railcar has been sitting out in the elements for years but some people in the area would rather try to raise money to spruce it up and keep it as a piece of history.
Mayor Frank Butt says they’re waiting to hear from someone with expertise in the field as such a cost-estimate on restoration is required before any decisions are made. He’s confident that the town council would put up $20,000 toward the cost.
He says if the cost to refurbish was $100,000, then $20,000 would be good investment but Mayor Butt is not certain if $200,000 would pass the test.
