Some essential services in Baie Verte will be unavailable today and for the foreseeable future following a fire in the town over the weekend.
A building which housed the local youth centre, an insurance company, hair salon, and fitness centre was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning.
The call came in around 2 a.m., and despite best efforts firefighters were unable to save the structure.
The gym also catered to workers’ compensation clients receiving such treatment as physiotherapy.
Rex Bowers, mayor of Baie Verte, was one of the firefighters who responded to the call.
“We lost the place, completely gone, burned flat to the ground. It’s a very big loss, definitely essential services.”
Bowers says the physio clients will likely have to travel to Springdale for treatment until another solution is found.
There were no injuries. There is word yet on the cause of the fire.
