The Mayor of St. John’s says a safe injection site is an initiative that must be headed by the provincial governmment.
Over the weekend 20-year-old Benjamin Olivero died near a park bench close to the Convention Centre.
His mom, Tina, says he died after ingesting cocaine that was laced with fentanyl.
That tragedy has reinvigorated calls for a safe injection site in the capital city.
Danny Breen says such a facility would have to be set up by the province, as the city neither has the resources nor the expertise to run it.
He says discussions around a safe injection site are ongoing, but no decisions have been made.
Health Minister Tom Osborne doesn’t comment on opening up a specific site, but does say over the last week they have provided about 400 naloxone kits to to stakeholders in the downtown—such as to bar staff and security guards.
