Parks Canada is reminding of the detrimental effects that feeding the wildlife can have.
The manager of resource conservation, Laura Collier, says in Parks Canada areas people should have a “pack in, pack out” mentality. That means not leaving anything behind, and using proper bins to dispose of garbage.
She says people should never try to entice animals with food or feed it to them, as it can be dangerous for both the wildlife and humans.
Foxes on Signal Hill have been a persistent issue over the years. Collier says feeding foxes can negatively affect their ability to survive in the wild.
She says feeding foxes can influence their ability to hunt, and can affect their ability to teach pups how to hunt. She assures that there is more than enough food in protected areas to support the animals.
Collier also notes that feeding the animals can encourage them to interact with humans and lead them near roadways, which will increase the likelihood of them being hit.
