RCMP say they have no plans to close the detachment on Fogo Island. It is remaining open and, in fact, some renovations are in the works to update the detachment. However, they are not making any long-term commitment to maintain the status quo.
The Town of Fogo Island said yesterday that they have been told the permanent full-time officer will be downgraded to a temporary part-time position, and based out of Gander.
RCMP are experiencing real pressures in terms of recruitment, not unlike other sectors, and have to ensure that police officers are placed where they are needed most.
The force is looking at what the situation may be in the fall as other detachment areas have greater needs in terms of crime and calls for service.
