A new program is hoping to integrate Ukrainian newcomers into communities across Newfoundland and Labrador by using host families.
The Association for New Canadians has launched the Homestay Hosting Program looking for families or individuals who can house Ukrainian newcomers as they navigate through their settlement journey to “set roots” and make this province their home.
The collaboration between the ANC and the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, aims to foster a sense of belonging and community among Ukrainian newcomers by encouraging local families to open their doors and hearts, offering them an opportunity to create lasting connections and support their integration into the province.
We are collaborating with Dept. of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills on a Homestay Hosting initiative for Ukrainian newcomers. Approved Newfoundland & Labradorian hosts will receive $1,000 monthly for up to 5 months. Interested? Contact: homestay@ancnl.ca or 709 693 2918 pic.twitter.com/rm2dLWQuXU

Kerry Murray, Associate Director of Ukraine Services, says there is an in-depth vetting process to ensure the safety of everyone involved and he wants to be clear that the ANC is there to support both the host family and Ukrainian family.
He says besides the initial application, interview, and home visit, there’s an orientation session for host families and one for Ukrainian families separately, and biweekly check-ins by phone or email for all parties involved.
Murray says approved host families will be given a monthly stipend of $1,000 for up to five months, aimed at offsetting the costs associated with hosting.
Beyond financial compensation, Murray states that hosts will have the opportunity to assist newcomers in community involvement, language improvement, and integration into Canadian society. He says the program aims to create lasting friendships, cultural exchanges, and a sense of unity within the province.
