Safety NL asserts that the province’s ATV regulations need to encompass practical training in the operation of the machines.
President and CEO Sean Kelly responded to two distinct ATV crashes in the province last weekend, resulting in the loss of lives of two young women.
Kelly explains that the current ATV regulations mandate that individuals under the age of 16 be trained and supervised by an adult with safety training. While the province is in the process of developing an online ATV training program as part of its regulations, he says the operation of heavy and powerful ATVs necessitates specialized practical training.
He suggests that a hands-on training component, conducted by a qualified instructor, would demonstrate proper driver operating techniques, actions to take, and measures to avoid in order to prevent potential rollovers.
Kelly emphasizes that Safety NL looks forward to maintaining a close collaboration with the provincial government, RCMP, RNC, and others to formulate a practical training program for ATVs.
