The federal minister responsible for housing says providing affordable housing options is going to take an “all hands on deck” effort.
Liberal MP Sean Fraser was in the province this past week. He told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that he wants to engage provincial and municipal governments to build housing “like it’s wartime effort.”
When the Liberals were first elected to office in 2015, Fraser says the conversation around affordable housing was mainly in concern to lower-income people, but that’s not the case anymore.
He says now working class people, students, and seniors are also struggling to find affordable places to live.
Fraser says government has to change its focus in order to work on the full picture.
He says their approach will incentivize builders to put up units at a price that middle-class families can afford. Fraser admits there are a number of moving parts and it won’t be easy, but believes a change in focus will make a huge impact in the future.
