People between the ages of 31 and 60 made up the bulk of deaths due to overdose, or drug toxicity, in recent years.
That’s according to numbers released last week by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.
The available statistics span from 2018 to 2022, and don’t include all suspected drug toxicity deaths in 2022 because some cases are still under investigation.
No specific numbers are available for 2023 despite a recent spike in sudden drug-related deaths. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Nash Denic came forward last month indicating that his office was investigating 11 deaths linked to cocaine and drug toxicity in July alone.
The Medical Examiner’s Office says in 2018, 25 of the 35 confirmed deaths due to drug toxicity were among those between the ages of 31 and 60. Six were between 61 and 70 and the number of people below the age of 30 was so small, the numbers are not reported for privacy reasons.
In 2022, 37 of the 55 confirmed drug toxicity deaths were people in the 31 to 60 age group. Seven were between 21 and 30 and nine were between 61 and 70.
