A day after he was cleared of a stabbing on George Street, Robert Belbin was back before the courts Thursday, charged with murder and dozens of gun offences.
In February, the 21-year-old was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Seamus Secord. The homicide occurred in or near a home on Mayor Avenue in the centre of St. John’s. But Belbin is also facing more than 30 serious gun charges going back to a rash of shootings in the metro area last spring and summer.
For now, those charges are being dealt with at the same time as the murder case.
In court yesterday, the Crown said they’re still going through the roughly 10,000 pages of disclosure evidence, adding they’re “two-thirds of the way there.”
Belbin remains in custody and is due back in court on October 11 when he’s scheduled to enter pleas to the charges.
On Wednesday, Belbin was acquitted of aggravated assault in the George Street incident last year, but still found guilty of assault. He’ll be sentenced for that offence in early November.
