A working group has been formed and work is now underway to review the province’s fish price setting process.
This year’s crab fishery experienced a lengthy delay due to a dispute over crab prices that harvesters believed was too low. Snow crab is one of the province’s most lucrative fisheries.
The FFAW demanded changes to the fish price setting process and a review was announced over the summer.
Labour Minister Bernard Davis is hopeful a solution can be found in time for the next crab fishing season.
He says they hope to get to a formula-based approach, something that harvesters, the industry and association have been looking for. “We were very close last year,” says Davis. “We have that in some species now and are hoping the same can be achieved for crab.”
