A tree in Channel-Port aux Basques has been embraced by residents as a symbol of the resilience of the town in the wake of Hurricane Fiona.
The town has adopted the slogan “Stronger than the storm” and is using the solitary tree – which survived Fiona’s fury while everything around it was leveled—as a powerful symbol as the anniversary of the storm approaches.
Mayor Brian Button acknowledges that while the pain and stress is still very much being felt, they’ve chosen the tree, on Water Street East in Channel, as the location for a gathering tomorrow for people throughout the region.
“It’s not for Port aux Basques, it’s for everyone in the region,” says Button, “our communities all suffered together.”
Tomorrow’s ceremony will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
