A woman who stabbed a man to death in downtown St. John’s two years ago has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Until last week, 30-year-old Lorraine Obed was facing a charge of second-degree murder for killing 49-year-old Jimmy Corcoran.
But she formally pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in Supreme Court yesterday.
The incident happened near the top of Carter’s Hill, within sight of RNC headquarters, on August 26, 2021.
Corcoran ended up bleeding to death on the street despite best efforts of police and paramedics.
The facts paint a picture of a volatile relationship fueled by drugs and alcohol in a neighbourhood where that’s not uncommon. Neighbours have long complained about the drug, crime and addictions issues in the area.
Another murder four months later, and just a stone’s throw away, continues to work its way through the courts.
Obed and Corcoran had been together on and off, but she said he was abusive and had been stalking her.
The crime of manslaughter means while she didn’t plan or intend to kill him, a criminal act still caused his death.
Obed remains in custody pending the sentencing phase in mid-December.
