The head of NL Hydro will not say if she has seen or received a proposal from Quebec regarding Churchill Falls and Gull Island.
Hydro held a news conference Friday to provide an update on the long-troubled Labrador-Island Link, which sends power from Muskrat Falls to Newfoundland and beyond.
Later, Hydro president and CEO Jennifer Williams was asked if she had seen or received any proposals from Quebec on future supply from Churchill Falls, and/or Gull Island.
Williams paused before choosing her words carefully, but ultimately dodged the question.
“We are equipped with the right people and the right headspace to make sure that we do everything we can to get the best possible outcomes associated with that incredible asset in Labrador … I really don’t want to comment too much beyond what I just did.”
Quebec wants a deal for power from Labrador beyond 2041, when the current contract expires.
Premier Andrew Furey said two weeks ago discussions were ongoing, telling Quebec, “show me the money,” adding he was waiting for an offer.
Meanwhile, Williams said “she’s very confident” in the reliability of the Labrador-Island link for this coming winter, even as Hydro embarks on $30 million worth of fixes over the next four years.
She described continued issues with the LIL as “normal” in the early years of any project of its scale.
“So what we’re doing is what all utilities would do, is early in-service, when you find issues you need to address, you address them early in the operation and that will lead to long-term reliable operation.”
Hydro is also putting off a final maximum test up to 900 megawatts until the end of the winter, saying that extra capacity is not needed in the short term.
