Hockey NL says it has been implementing similar policies to the Minimum Attire Rule introduced by Hockey Canada for the last number of years.
Hockey Canada says players must wear a base layer at all times while changing in the locker room, and even while taking a shower.
Those who are not wearing a base layer are asked to change in a bathroom or unused dressing room.
President of Hockey NL, Dr. Jared Butler, says they support the new policy, which only represents an adaptation to measures they already have in place.
He says they are obligated to adhere to the Hockey Canada policy which applies from the novice to the recreational and senior hockey levels.
Butler says parents are asking them questions about the new policy, and while he admits that some are not in agreement, that portion represents a “small minority.”
“But we’ll adapt and move on” Butler says “to ensure that everyone who wants to take part in a game of hockey can do so in a safe, fun and inclusive environment.”
