Its Fire Prevention Week and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department is driving home the message: “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.”
Captain Cara Pardy, Fire Prevention Officer with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, says cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires and fire-related injuries. Captain Pardy says the main reason for such fires is leaving food unattended.
And, cooking fires aren’t just confined to those in which cooking oil is used.
Even a pot of boiling potatoes can catch fire if it runs out of water. If you’re using the stove or oven, she recommends setting up a timer.
SJRFD has an information booth set up at the Avalon Mal today through Saturday. Firefighters will also be going to schools in their jurisdiction to monitor fire drills and to speak with anyone who has questions.
