The provincial government has approached those camping out on a grassy area across from Confederation Building to put them in contact with supports available in the community, but many of those there say emergency shelters are not for them.
Ashley Noonan says she feels much safer where she is now than she did in a shelter.
Many of those living in tents on the Prince Philip Parkway tell VOCM News that a community is developing in the area. Noonan says government has offered some options, but she says none of the campers are interested in shelters.
“Nobody here is going to go for a shelter,” she says “Everybody here has been denied, or refused, kicked out of…” She wants proof from government that they won’t be forgotten in a hotel room, simply because they want them off the lawn.
